Three steps to healthy, happy feet

  1. 1. Assess

    Nail and skin health, foot structure, and a medical history, systemic conditions and medications show up in feet first.

  2. 2. Treat

    Nails trimmed, filed and cleaned; calluses, corns and cracked skin debrided; fungal nails and skin conditions identified and treated.

  3. 3. Protect

    A short and long term protocol to keep feet healthy, with your GP looped in if anything needs it.

Why a podiatrist, not a salon

A regular pedicure improves appearance. A medical pedicure is performed by a podiatrist trained in foot anatomy who can diagnose and treat what they find, fungal infections, ingrown nails, corns, cracked heels, with sterile instruments, in a clinical environment. (No polish; we'll advise on that instead.)

Healthy feet typically need one every 6 to 8 weeks. Think of it as servicing for the pair of feet you plan to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Is a medical pedicure painful?
A medical pedicure is not usually painful and is designed to be a comfortable, relaxing experience. Water spray drills cool the drill during the procedure to minimise discomfort, and if you do feel any discomfort the podiatrist can adjust the treatment to suit you.
What is the difference between a medical pedicure and a regular pedicure?
A medical pedicure is performed by a podiatrist or chiropodist trained in foot anatomy who can diagnose and treat various foot conditions, whereas a regular pedicure focuses on the appearance of the feet. It uses sterile instruments to remove dead skin, calluses and corns and to treat nail and skin conditions such as fungal infections, ingrown nails and dryness. We do not apply nail polish and will provide recommendations on this during the consultation.
How often should I get a medical pedicure?
Generally, individuals with healthy feet are recommended to get a medical pedicure every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain the health and appearance of their feet. Those with certain foot conditions or who are prone to foot problems may need them more frequently, so it is best to consult a podiatrist about the ideal frequency for your needs.
Are medical pedicures covered by health insurance?
Often a portion or all of the medical pedicure consult may be covered by health insurance, though this varies by plan and the condition being treated, so check with your provider. At JS Podiatry we offer direct billing via our HICAPS terminal, or provide a detailed receipt you can submit for reimbursement.
Can podiatrists perform medical pedicures?
Yes, podiatrists are trained to perform medical pedicures and they are a common procedure for podiatrists and chiropodists. Podiatrists understand foot anatomy and can provide personalised recommendations for foot care, footwear and maintenance, as well as treat any conditions diagnosed during treatment.
